As you said, pimsleur is really worth for a FULL beginner in a language. I used it for languages (Brazilian and Japanese) since I didn't know at all those languages. It helped me a lot for prononciation, especially for Brazilian. I was listening 1 lesson at least 3 or 4 times in 1 or 2 days, sometimes more... So it took me about 6 - 8 months to finish the 3 levels of each language each level have 30 lessons). After that I started to work with Assimil (I'm french :-) ), also a very good method.

Good review.I've done pimsleur 1-5 spanish and agree with everything you say here.I've found them to be a great learning tool when used in conjunction with other resources.Unfortunately if people ask me if I would recommend them, I have to say that they are way overpriced and I would only recommend them if they can find them free (library for example) or at a greatly reduced price.
I think that pimsleur's failure to provide a transcript and or at least a vocabulary list with interpretations is a very serious flaw and undermines the usefulness of the program. I am studying GREEK and the transcript is essential for understanding the pronunciation of many words. I end up having to use an interpreter or G/E dictionary which costs much time. I am also a visual learner. There is no reason for them not to provide, even at a cost that I think thousands of people would pay and they could profit by. Personally I discourage all from using this program.
I know this because I bought Spanish I & 2 Latin America in 2012. Last year, I decided to pull them out and finally go through the lessons. I wanted to download the reading booklets and tried to get them on the website, but the web sight for pimsleurapproach.com was now automatically redirected to pimsleaur.com. After searching that site, I called and I was told that the company licensed to sell the product as pimsleurapproach.com was no longer in business and the booklets for Pimsleur Approach Gold Edition were no longer available.
Interesting review and much appreciated. I wish I had your dedication to learning so many languages.I tried RS for many months and didn't really get anywhere, I read your review of pimsleur a few months ago and decided to try it. It has worked very well for me, actually got me excited about learning.I just finished level one and am looking forward to the other four levels. I have been listening to a local HIspanic radio station and watching subtitled spanish movies and tv shows, I find it helps me a lot with learning the sounds of the language.
i began a pimsleur course in arabic, got maybe five lessons in and then switched to a long-term spanish pimsleur course (150 lessons) and am halfway through it, planning to return to the 90- lesson arabic course when finished with spanish. the results of my little work on arabic are astounding: i live in detroit and encounter many arab people and when i use my 20 or so words that stuck with me they all claim i speak them perfectly. i am amazed and very encouraged.
with respect to pimsleur in general, i use it in the car and find it does not interfere with my driving. i would not otherwise have the time to proceed as i have. one observation i have is that the blank spaces of time are useful to me as i rapidly repeat the (now) spanish phrase over and over before the next instruction, in an attempt to engrave it in my muscle memory. it is my theory that when i get to the point of trying to understand fast conversation, i will have the language sounds more deeply absorbed, and that when i speak i will be closer to native pronunciation, than if i had just caught the meaning and pronunciation once and moved on to the next question. you seem to mention leaving those seconds silent, but i think my method is better. but reading your comments leaves me with another worry: am i proceeding too fast? i only repeat the lessons that give me lots of trouble. so out of 70 so far i may have repeated 10 and these only once. maybe i am too impatient, but am i rushing too much?
I am curious to know if the versions offered by Audible are the latest revisions of these lessons. The release date shown on Audible is 2010, but the free lesson I obtained from pimsleur.com mentions a 2012 copyright date. This leaves me wondering what, if anything, has changed? Should I pay more for potentially newer downloads straight from the source? 2ff7e9595c
